The cornerstone of Big Spring Presbyterian
Church is our Lord Jesus Christ. In Him we are being
built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His
Spirit.
Our church has a rich heritage. The original log meeting
house, erected in 1737, stood adjacent to the winding Big
Spring. The present graystone structure was constructed in
1789. Over the years a variety of modifications and
additions have been made to enhance the beauty and usefulness of
the building. These include the colorful windows and the
mural painting entitled, "Vision of Our
Lord Enthroned."
Big Spring Church is a friendly fellowship of Christians seeking
to honor, love, and serve the triune God. Opportunities for
traditional and creative worship, spiritual nurture, and
evangelistic and social outreach are offered to enable us to
fulfill the Great Commission - making and incorporating disciples
of Jesus Christ. |

We are members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
PCUSA was formed in 1983, a reunion of the Presbyterian Church in
the U.S. (PCUS) and the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.
(UPCUSA), commonly referred to as the southern branch and the
northern branch, respectively.
The ecclesiastical arm of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.), is our denomination's highest governing
body, The General
Assembly. It is representative of the unity of the
synods, presbyteries, sessions, and congregations that comprise
the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The Book of
Order, part of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.), states "The
General Assembly constitutes the bond of union, community, and
mission among all its congregations and governing
bodies." |
|
General Assembly
encompasses 16 Synods, regional governing bodies made up of many
presbyteries. Our Synod, the Synod
of the Trinity, serves 16 presbyteries, 1,300 churches
and nearly 300,000 members in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the
Upper Ohio Valley. According to the Book of
Order, "Synod is the intermediate governmental unit
responsible for the mission of the Church throughout its
region." Our Synod works primarily in the areas of
social and racial justice, evangelism and church development,
education, vocation and nurture, and communication and
stewardship.
Our presbytery is The Presbytery
of Carlisle. Explained in the Book of
Order as "a corporate expression of the Church consisting
of all the churches and minister of the Word and Sacrament within
a certain district," our Presbytery is a faith community of
nearly 17,000 members in 52 congregations. Fifty-one of our
churches are located in the south-central Pennsylvania counties of
Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry, Juniata, Fulton, Franklin and
Adams. The Monaghan congregation meets in Dillsburg, York
County, and the Mt. Olivet congregation meets near Hancock, MD.
Each local church, or congregation, has a Session,
which is responsible for the mission and government of the
church. Moderated by our minister, the Session
is charged with the responsibility of leading, nurturing, and
challenging the congregation in fulfilling its stated mission and
the mission of the whole Church in the world. |

| This briefly describes who we are as a local
church and as a part of the Presbyterian Church worldwide.
Please join us in fulfilling the Great Commission - we're eager
for you to join us! |
